Definition of a Student-Athlete
A student-athlete is a student whose enrollment was solicited by a member of the athletics staff or other representative of athletics interests with a view toward the student's ultimate participation in the intercollegiate athletics program. Any other student becomes a student-athlete only when the student reports for an intercollegiate squad that is under the jurisdiction of the athletics department. (DII 12.02.7)
Academic Eligibility
All student-athletes must meet certain academic requirements to be eligible to practice and compete at a NCAA member institution:
Full-Time Enrollment (12 credits) - All student-athletes must be enrolled in a full-time course load (at least 12 credits) for each semester in order to participate in intercollegiate athletics. The only exception to this rule is for those student-athletes enrolled in their last academic semester prior to graduation. These student's may be less than full-time but remain eligible.
Cumulative GPA - All student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 to maintain their eligibility.
Major Declaration - Prior to the start of their fifth full-time semester, a student-athlete must declare their major of choice. Additionally, beginning with their fifth semester, at least a full course load (or 12 credits) must be degree applicable.
24 Credit Requirement - A student-athlete is required to complete at least 24 credits during the academic year which can include summer term. However, at least 75% (or 18 credits) must be completed during the regular academic year (fall & spring)
9 Credit Requirement - Each student-athlete is required to complete at least 9 credits for each full-time semester to maintain their eligibility for the following subsequent semester. (Effective Spring 2016).
Athletic Scholarships
The NCAA has very strict limits on the amount of full scholarships that are allowed for each sport. In addition to each sport's NCAA limit, member conferences (e.g., NSIC, WCHA, etc) have the ability to create their own maximum equivalencies to better balence competition throughout their particular leagues. An equivalency is also known as a Grant-In-Aid which is comprised of tuition, fees, books, and room & board. Athletic scholarships are only good for one academic year at a time but are renewable. At the conclusion of the academic year, the scholarship can be renewed, reduced, or non-renewed entirely at the coach's discretion. Student-athletes that are non-renewed have the right to appeal the decision. If this is your circumstance, please contact the compliance office to begin the process.
